Data are presented as mean ± standard error of the mean. Measurements were obtained 120 min after oleic acid injection at a PEEP of 5 cm H2O (ARDS) and during a decremential PEEP trial (ARDS20, ARDS15, ARDS10, ARDS5, ARDS0). Each PEEP level was maintained for 15 min before each measurement to allow for haemodynamic and respiratory stabilisation.
